Wegovy

Semaglutide approved specifically for weight loss — now available as a pill, too.

Wegovy is semaglutide FDA-approved for chronic weight management. The injection titrates to 2.4 mg weekly, and as of December 2025 there's also an oral Wegovy tablet (25 mg daily) for weight loss.

Results

In the STEP 1 trial, injectable semaglutide 2.4 mg produced about 15% average weight loss. The oral 25 mg version showed about 16.6% in adherent participants in its trial — a strong needle-free option.

How it compares

Against tirzepatide (Zepbound), semaglutide lost the head-to-head on weight loss (see Wegovy vs Zepbound), but it has a long track record and now multiple formats.

Side effects

Primarily GI symptoms early on; boxed thyroid-tumor warning; cautions for pancreatitis and gallbladder disease. Not for everyone — a provider decides suitability.
